The fedora-release configuration file under /etc directory can be useful to show the version of Fedora or Fedora release. To get the Fedora just display the fedora-release Fedora release configuration file using the cat command as shown on example below. The example below execute on Fedora 9 and the result show the Fedora "Fedora release 9 (Sulphur)".
The cat command example below display the /etc/fedora-release configuration file on Fedora 9:
[root@fedora ~]# cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 9 (Sulphur)
Use ls -l command to show the fedora-release file permission, owner, group owner, file size, date created or edited and file location.
[root@fedora ~]# ls -l /etc/fedora-release
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27 2008-05-06 13:16 /etc/fedora-release
